Pedro Almodóvar’s film “Broken Embraces” ("Los Abrazos Rotos") and the Chilean film “The Maid” by Sebastián Silva earned nominations from the Golden Globes on Tuesday for Best Foreign Films. The 67th edition of the Golden Globes awards will take place on January 17th.  The French film, “A Prophet,” the Italian “Baaria” and German “The White Ribbon” were the other foreign films selected by the Globes to compete with Almodóvar and Silva.

“Broken Embraces” won the Golden Globe nomination over Fernando Trueba’s “The Dance of Victory” ("El baile de la Victoria") which is Spain’s official choice to represent the country at the upcoming Oscar’s. Almodóvar also beat out the Spanish-Argentine co-production “The Secret of Her Eyes” (“El secreto de sus ojos"), by director Juan José Campanella.

With this nomination, “The Maid,” produced on a shoestring budget of less than $300.000 dollars, sealed a stellar year replete with international prizes awarded to the director as well as the main actress Catalina Saavedra.

"The Maid " beat out another Chilean film, "Dawson Island 10", a moving film by Miguel Littin that shows the horrors of the concentration camp in Southern Chile where several of Salvador Allende’s government ministers were held after the military coup of September 11, 1973.

But the rival films heading to the Golden Globes are all top notch: the German "The White Ribbon" by Michael Haneke, won the Palm d’ Or in Cannes and the French "A Prophet”  by Jacques Audiard, has received enormous positive, international critical acclaim.
